Microsoft to offer Click-to-Connect VOIP Calls

As americas moves closer to being a VOIP nation, many companies are trying to get their hands on VOIP services. Intel recently funded Jajah and thereby trying to get piece of the VOIP action. Almost every month a new VOIP start-ups crowding the market (mountain view seems to be the favorite destination. everyone trying to Big G eh?)

Microsoft can't stay away from action. In fact, many people don't know for the fact that Microsoft Netmeeting was one of the most oldest form of VOIP. Unfortunately not marketed well, Netmeeting was limited to Networking people. Microsoft lately started testing their Office communication application to leverage on VOIP. They would be bundling these apps with their forthcoming office products. Bundling your applications is always the easy way to reach the audience, but i seriosly hope the message is read properly.

Moving on, Microsoft will now power their Microsoft Live Maps service with Verizon VOIP Click-to-Connect software. This new feature will let people place calls to local businesses, such as shops, businesses and restaurants, directly over the internet. Calls are routed over Verizon’s SIP Gateway network, and do not require an adapter or any other special equipment. I am sure people will enjoy this since they no more have to write down those numbers after they search for a business.

If you notice the screenshot, I searched for a Italian Restaurant and got some listing. If i hover over one
of the restaurant, it shows an option to "Call for Free". Thats Click-to-connect feature. You can then type your number or use computer to make a call. If you give your number, you will get a callback, once you pickup, it will be automatically connected to the business you were looking for.

Click-to-Connect is a great way to save money on local calls especially calls to businesses in USA. :-)
