MTNL launches VOIP Service to make cheap international calls

Finally the day has come and Indian PSU telecom giant is listening to VOIP. The biggest PSU telecom company in India, MTNL has officially launched VOIP for their residential customers in Metro Cities.

At VOIP Guide, we wrote several articles on how India is lagging behind the world in VOIP and why its important to have our very own Legal VOIP provider to stop illegal voip outfits. It seems the indian government is finally listening, MTNL (hopefully BSNL would too)has introduced voice overt internet protocol- (VoIP) international voice calls at Re1 per minute, without having to use a PC. The service shall be available to about 150 countries.

This a BIG news for indians calling all over the world since there is a massive NRI crowd. Literally billions of international calling minutes are served each month from India. This market is getting massive and MTNL don't want to loose capitalising on those minutes.

This new Netfone VOIP service that will be operational over its broadband network will allow international subscriber dialling (ISD) subscribers to make calls at this rate to to landlines and mobiles the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and many other countries. and for Japan, Malaysia and many other countries Rs2 per minute.

The service will initially launched as prepaid cards service at MTNL PCO holders. MTNL's broadband customers subscribing to the VoIP service will be able to make international calls from a normal telephone without a PC.

VOIP Guide noted a very important point in MTNL's official press release. MTNL has tied up with Aksh Optifibre and they will be providing this VOIP service via SIP (Session Initiation Protocol). Anyone dreaming of a greatest ever VOIP Hack ? :-)

According to the PR release, the service will provided via a Analog telephone adapter (ATA). The customer can make two types of calls SIP to SIP for local, national and international calls and SIP to PSTN / mobile for international calls only. Does that mean we can connect to MTNL SIP even from PC? Yes, We guess so. Do i need to tell you that we will find a hack for the same?

This makes MTNL one of key telecom providers in the circle and puts them ahead of competition. With IPTV and VOIP bundled with regular telephone, MTNL will soon be a leader. Its about time to ring the bells for Reliance/Bharati? I guess so.
