Telcan.com Telcan Unlimited India Calling VOIP Provider Review

After Vonage introduced the Vonage World Plan which included India Unlimited Calls, It seems lot of "run of the mill" VOIP Providers trying to duplicate Vonage World Plan. Before you buy Telcan India Unlimited Plan, You must read our Telcan.com Review.

As you already know, Puting your hard earned money into a VOIP Phone services isn't a cakewalk anymore with new VOIP Providers launching every week and vanish the next month. How would you choose your VOIP Provider? Thankfully, you are reading VOIP Guide and we can help you choose the right VOIP Provider for your needs.

Today we are looking at Telcan.com. Telcan claims to offers unlimited calls to India plan for a flat monthly fee of $29.99.

Lets do a Telcan Review.

1) Telcan charges you $29.99 as start-up One time Fee.
2) Monthly fee of #34 ($29.99 + $4 tax) as long as you continue.
3) Telcan offers their VOIP service through local access numbers.
4) There is no contract between you and telcan. You may cancel the service. They claim there are no cancellation fees.
5) With telcan unlimited india plan, you can dial any number in India including landline and Mobile.
6) Telcan has a phone and email support, which is good.

Now, Lets see why Telcan probably isn't suitable for you.

1) No SIP service or Support.
2) Available only via Access numbers
3) You need to register your number from where you can make calls telcan access number.
4) You can't change your authorized number during the month. Only 1 change per month.

I have also reviewed a Telcan.com review from VOIP Guide reader, Karthik. Lets see what he has to say about Telcan.

This is Karthik here. Today I received a mail from from this Telcan.com informing me about their new Unlimited Indian Calling feature. This works exactly like a calling card hence no contract issues.

But the flip side is,

  • Calls have to originate from a pre designated phone number. Hence you cannot share your plan with your friends or Family.
  • It will cost you about $34 a month. Setting aside the Betamax if we compare this with a regular calling card which costs about 1.2 cents per minute it will translate to abt 48 Hrs a month ( hope my calculation is right ). I just checked my usage per month and it does not exceed 25hrs and the total talktime of my room mate and friends is about 25hrs. Looks like this plan will be great if we have a free local calling plan ( any time unlimited , unlike unlimited after 9:00 PM ) from Vonage or other similar plan and sharing with my room mates with Time division Multiplexing in place :) but remember there is an additional cost associated with Local calling plan.
  • Telcan does not offer a local number for all states in US and Canada.

In my view, This is a very deceiving calling card plan. Hope you can share this with your readers on blog.

Thanks Karthik for sharing his thoughts on Telcan. I believe his points are to be noted by people who do not exceed the calling limit each month and can save money on these unlimited india calling plans.

Secondly, I wanted to add that those who wish to call Telcan access numbers can make use of Google Voice for calling outside your state to save money :-)

Please let us know your Telcan Review , Feedback and comments.

Sabse Technologies Bought Mobivox VOIP Service

Sabse Technologies is on the roll, After acquiring Jaxtr, Sabse now bought Mobivox. What does that mean to you as a VOIP consumer? Lets find out.

Sabse Technologies owned by Sabir Bhatia first hit news with their free conference calls service called SabseBolo. SabseBolo primarily offers free conference calls to Indian users. However Its evident that Sabse doesn't want to stop at providing conference calls or rather expand their conference calls services other parts of the world. Especially entering US and Europe market for conference call services will be the key focus for SabseBolo.

Considering these points, Acquiring Jaxtr was mainly a move to acquire existing Jaxtr infrastructure around the access numbers service they provide and now mobivox would also mean expanding the infrastructure, coz even Mobivox offers a very similar local number service.

Sabse might also try to merge Jaxtr and Mobivox together to create one local access number VOIP Provider brand. However, its very unlikely cause Jaxtr and Mobivox are already established VOIP services and they are better that way.

Mobivox has however lost lot of ground after they stopped offering free international calls service and started flat rate 2.1 cents calls to 40 countries. Many free calls users moved to other services in the mean time. However, that also means that whoever stuck around with Mobivox are most likely loyal paid users which is the key for Sabse Technologies.

Lets hope that SabseBolo can again provide free international calls via Mobivox and inegrate the access numbers for Jaxtr and Mobivox to cover more countries/cities. That would benefit all existing users and new users on both these VOIP services.

Looking at all other free destinations and calling rates, its very clear that Betamax wants to penetrate the market again with new VOIP service Rynga, untill of course they launch a new service.

Google Voice to Buy RingPlus?

There are rumours that Google Voice is looking at Ring Plus to extend its VOIP services. Although these are clearly rumours at this stage. Lets analyse why Google Voice would be interested in Free VOIP Provider like Ringplus.

RingPlus is a Free VOIP provider from USA allowing to make free international calls to lot of destinations worldwide. RingPlus manages to run their service using a Advertisement Platform which runs Ads before placing a call. They replace your ringtone with Ads. That means each call is monetized by RingPlus.

Google Voice might be interested in taking over Ring Plus for its Ad platform and the overall infrastructure they maintain. Obviously taking over the Ringplus user base which surely runs into thousands of users daily.

If this rumour is true then, Google Voice might be looking at Voice based Ad platform to be introduced in each Google Voice incoming or outgoing calls. This would be a great opportunity for Advertisers to reach audience and for Google Voice to monetize their resources effectively.

Lets see how this story develops in the coming weeks or months. We will keep a watch on Google Voice.

Telifu Unlimited Calls to India VOIP Provider Review

If you are considering a new VOIP Provider Telifu for making Unlimited Calls to India. Wait! Read this Telifu review before you sign up for them.

VOIP Guide has always been on the consumer side, we wrote hard hitting reviews of VOIP products and services to help consumers make the right choice.

Today we look at Telifu, a new VOIP Provider offering unlimited free calls to India. Those who already sign up to their services by reading about them somewhere else, probably didn't read the other side of the story which I am going to analyse today.

Most people thought Telifu providers USA based service which you can use to make calls to India. That means, telifu adapter will be sent to India and your family needs to use it to make calls to you or you can call them for FREE.

Telifu.com offers 5 calling plans out of which 3 are for India.

1) Bronze India Plan: For $9.99 per month, This plan gives you Unlimited Incoming Calls. Outgoing calls are billed at 2.1 cents per minute.

2) Gold India plan: For $16.99 per month, this plan gives you unlimited incoming to India and outgoing calls to USA/Canada.

3) Platinum India plan: For $19.99 per month, this plan gives you unlimited incoming to India and outgoing to USA/Canada. Additionally, you can choose your USA area code number.

A few things worth mentioning about Telifu before I start my analysis.

1) Telifu doesn't provide any contact address however gives their customer service phone number on their website.

2) For each Plan, there is adapter shipping charge of $9.99 and activation fee of $29.99.

3) Only 15 day trial period.

4) You need a broadband connection in India in order to use Telifu Service.

5) Trial period is defined as 250 minutes of free calling (inbound & outbound) or 30 days of free calling, which ever comes first. If you do not return the telifu adapter within 14 days, a recovery fee of $69.99 will be assessed.

5) A processing fee of US $ 29.99 assessed to close the account.

Now, I believe you already realised that Telifu is a total alien VOIP Provider with no advantage to consumers.

The idea of using a telifu adapter in India doesn't make any sense. I would rather use a linksys adapter in India and setup a IPKall number and call that number from USA for unlimited times.

You can also purchase 2 linksys adapters and make SIP-SIP calls and talk till your get a headache :-)

I wonder what on earth, Telifu was thinking before even coming out with these India calling plans especially when there are other prominent VOIP Providers like Nymgo, Localphone already providing quality services to Indians abroad.

I guess they are betting on the "Unlimited Calls to India" gimmick which after reading our Telifu Review, doesn't justify anymore.

My only honest advice for Telifu, STAY AWAY!

Are you satisfied with Vonage World Plan?

Vonage World Plan has been around for about a month and few VOIP Guide are using it already. We would like Vonage World Plan users to review their plan for everyone else.

Vonage World Plan when launched received lot of rave reviewes however those reviews can't beat real user reviews. India to Block VOIP Calls

The time is up for the Indian VOIP Market. India will soon start blocking all VOIP calls (incoming or outgoing). If you are calling India, Don't miss this news.

One of the most shocking news for Indian VOIP market is out! The verdict is India is going to block all VOIP services. The Intelligence Bureau is asking the government to block VOIP calls in and out of the country as a measure of national security.

The ban is not yet in place but it could come at any moment.

Who is going to lose when India Bans VOIP?

If ever India is going to ban VOIP, Calling rates to India will skyrocket. Our best guess is around 7-10 cents per minute or even higher, since most VOIP operators will have to end up negotiating with tier 1 telephony providers such as Bharati, Reliance or BSNL etc. It will become a monopolistic market where a few telecom providers will own your long distance calls. This would also been that cheap international calling services like Nymgo, Tringme, Localphone will have to reinvent the wheel to lower the prices further but with only a few telecom providers in play this would not be a cakewalk.

How effectively India can ban VOIP?

Well look at how UAE managed to ban VOIP. India can do the same but there are and will always be loopholes such as VPN, using IAX instead of SIP (if they ask ISPs to block 5060 ports) etc.

We believe this move is totally stupid for following reasons.

1) VOIP is not the only way of communication for anti-Indian groups. They can very well use Satellite Phones or scrambled phone lines. Government needs to upgrade their "1970" mindframe.

2) VOIP ban means more illegal VOIP usage which in turn means loss of revenue for the govt.

3) It might force us to believe that certain parties are going to benefit from this move. The telecom operators in India certainly do not like to share their revenues with cheap VOIP providers. I will be buying Bharati, Reliance communications shares now because they will skyrocket after they ban VOIP.

What do you think about this move by the government? Does this make any sense to you?

Let us know your comments and lets hope this never gets implemented for real.

Business Telephone Systems and the Future of Telecommunications

As is usually the case with technology, the big leaps forward take place at the higher levels (in the corporate sphere) and then trickle down to ordinary users at home. When it comes to telephone systems, there is no exception: Business Telephone Systems provide cutting-edge solutions to the many and diverse communication needs that a company may have, incorporating the latest technologies and utilizing the most efficient resources possible.Ask any business leader, and they will tell you that having a modern telecommunications system installed in their offices is absolutely crucial when it comes to finding new clients/customers as well as maintaining old ones, in addition to realizing a whole host of administrative chores that are essential for keeping a company afloat. In fact, the mere reference to telephones alone is insufficient at this point in the game, as all kinds of telecommunications pathways need to be integrated in order to maximize efficiency at the business place—but we'll get to that later.

With regards to simply having efficient and cost-effective telephony services at a business's offices, one crucial factor is having a Least Cost Routing service in place. Least Cost Routing (LCR) is a Business Telephone System solution that enables a buyer (aka the business) to realize outbound calls at the least possible expense, with variable controls regarding the quality of the routes being used and the quality of the calls being made. Any business that realizes large volumes of outbound calls would be wise to contract an LCR team, or install an LCR box in their offices.

The way it works is like this: Various telecoms carriers are available to carry a call from a source location to a destination; what the LCR service accomplishes is that it finds the route with the lowest fares that can carry the call needing to be made. The premise here is the fact that telecoms carriers trade destinations with each other, and there is usually more than one option for any call being made. An LCR team will create a table with all the pertinent information of carriers, routes, rates, and call quality and route quality statistics and will calculate, using advanced algorithms, which finally configuration is in the best interests of the business at hand. Of course, a business can establish certain minimal call and route quality standards and impose them on the LCR service planning process. These are measured using certain criteria, such as the average duration of a call, the amount of calls answered out of the total amount of calls made, and the delay between the last digit in a phone number dialed and the time the caller actually begins to hear a ring. The first of these criteria relates to call quality, generally, and the second and third criteria refers to the route quality. Managing a tight ship in all these regards is a central component in any state of the art Business Telephone System.

Another factor to be considered by any business trying to make their telephony service that much more efficient and streamlined is Computer Telephony Integration, or CTI. Basically, what this is about is the ability a business has to coordinate computer and telephone usage. Since modern telephone equipment is really nothing more than a specialized computer, it is logical that telephone systems should be subordinated to a business's computer network. Though there are different degrees of integration possible (first-party call control and third-party call control), the basic idea is the following: an operator can make their phone operations more streamlined and can access and save more information, more quickly. For example, a phone operator can make their dialing more expedient by utilizing automatic dialing or predictive dialing features of CTI, the latter of which is simply a more sophisticated version of the former, offering an operator a valuable tool in continuing their operations without glitches and as quickly as possible. Another aspect of CTI is the ability of operators to retrieve data from a centralized database system, accessing valuable information about the person calling them or the person they are calling (as the case may be), and allowing inbound calls to go through a series of informational filters which provide the operator with plenty of info from the get-go of a conversation. All of this information is stored in the central database, of course. Furthermore, CTI provides a business with the ability to implement call recording, a feature which can not only protect a business's interests in the case of possible litigation or claims, but generally allows for operators to accept legal commitments on the behalf of a caller and for a company to more securely monitor service quality.

In the end, Business Telephone Systems are all about sharpening a company's competitive edge. These modern systems are, in the best of cases, strategically designed to contemplate future advances in telephone and other telecommunications technologies, to cut communications costs, and to provide a higher quality service. No business profits or grows when calls are being dropped, when conversations are of poor quality and the people at either end of the line can barely understand or hear each other, and when calls aren't even getting through. Furthermore, businesses do not profit when phone operators have to tediously and laboriously search for necessary information in order to fulfill the purpose of the call they are making or that they are receiving, or when, after making or receiving a call, they have to follow an outdated and inefficient protocol in order to register whatever information was garnered from a given call. Business Telephone Systems provide companies with the ability to surmount these problems, and to create more streamlined in-house systems which reduce costs, cut times drastically (both as a measure of how long a call must take and how long it takes for the results of a call to be introduced into the company system or database), and help bring a business venture up to date with what is on the market. After all, within a relatively short period of time telephone networks will be completely subsumed by computer networks, and those that fail to rise to the opportunity will find their bottom line is seriously (and negatively) affected.

This article is written by Guest Blogger at VOIP Guides, Roger Collings. He is a telecommunications consultant who helps businesses to get the most out fo their telephone systems.

freecall2india.com offers free international calls to india

Access number based VOIP services were popular a while back but then Iowa Access number services faced legal hassles forcing most VOIP access number services to go out of business.

If you remember, Our friend Pat Phelan's allfreecalls.net and yak4ever both of which had to be shut down when they ran into legal issues with telecom service providers over termination fees.

However, it seems there are more VOIP providers ready to gamble with this strategy and the good thing is they are offering free international calls to india and many other countries.

Freecall2india is accessible from USA, UK and Brazil. You need to call their access numbers. Please note that when you call these access numbers, you will pay for the cost of calling the access number only. The international call leg is free. However its always better to check local calling rates to these numbers.

Once you are connected to freecall2india access number gateway, dial your preferred number in this format: Country Code (USA) + Area Code (Miami) + Phone Number #. For calling India, you would dial 9122268333456#

You can call following countries with Freecall2india (I really have no idea why they named the service free call 2 india when they offer more free international calls destinations)

Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Canada Mobile, Chile, China, China – Mobile, Colombia , Croatia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hong Kong – Mobile, India, India – Mobile, Indonesia , Italy, Japan, Jordan, Malaysia, Mexico , Panama, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Singapore – Mobile, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Thailand – Mobile, United Kingdom, United States , United States Mobile, Venezuela

* Mobile calls are also supported in select countries.

You can use one of the free calling services to dial their access number, so you get a end to end free international calls. You can either use Google Voice or any other free calls to USA service.

Do let us know your feedback on Freecall2India.com and their quality of service.

Jumblo increased calling rates to India

Many Betamax Services swiftly increased calling rates to India and other destinations including Smart Voip, Jumblo, VoipBlast and others.

Jumblo operates under dellmont Sarl, a betamax group company and they revised calling rates to India. JUMBLO has just increased calling rate to india from 0.7 eurocent to 0.9 eurocent per minute.

One of the reader Khan noted, that rates should be going down not up and moreover they have started charging 0.60 EUROCENTS service charge on every recharge.. EURO 10.60 is US$15.65(thats what my paypal statement said). 10.00 divided by .009 = 1111 minutes. USD$15.65 (Eu10.60) divided by 1111 = 1.41 US cents per min

Many readers reported that sticking to Jumblo.com is not a good deal anymore but still its the cheapest provider with local access numbers without monthly commitments or gimmicks like others. atleast compared to India LD or Indiaminutes. In fact most other betamax services offer higher calling rates to India.

So would you stick to Jumblo.com with these increased rates or already exploring a new VOIP provider to call India?

Toktumi Line2 Mobile VOIP Phone Service review

line2
Yesterday, we discussed how apple approved toktumi's Line2 App. Today we look at what Line2 Mobile VOIP really offers to consumers. Lets review the new toktumi line2 app.

Toktumi Line2 is purely a mobile VOIP service directly competing with Google Voice for Mobile which is yet to be approved by Apple and currently fighting a legal battle. While Google Voice struggles to make its way into Apple iphone App store, toktumi's Line2 sneaked in easily.

Line2 offers a second line with voicemail to your cell phone. You can place or receive calls from either number. Each has its own voicemail, call history, and contacts. Basically, line2 will make your handset work with 2 phone numbers. One real mobile number and one virtual phone number assigned by Toktumi.

You can get an 800 number, a local number, or even transfer over an existing number. Unlike other mobile VOIP applications, Line2 uses mobile network rather than wifi. This could be the selling point for toktumi while getting the apple (AT&T) approval :-)

Line2 totally relies on the Toktumi's VOIP service backend to offers its services. That means all line2 users will get some great VOIP services to utilize such astoktum's powerful hosted PBX system, which offers advanced features like call screening, auto attendant, do not disturb, conferencing, and after hours call handling. That itself makes Line2 a perfect business mobile VOIP service.

Additionally, you can configure Line2 as complete office phone system with centralized billing for your entire company by combining all office accounts. It also offers international calls at cheap calling rates. Guess, you would like to pass that.

As a business user, Line2 definately adds a lot of value to Mobile VOIP with PBX like features. However as a personal user, You would rather wait for Google voice for Mobile, mainly because its free and its google. heck yeah!

You can try Line2 for free for 30 days. Later its costs $15 per month. You can get Line2 for iphone or blackberry.

Apple approved Toktumi Mobile VOIP App and kept Google Voice at bay

In a extremely surprising development, Apple has approved a Google Voice alternative Toktumi's Mobile VOIP Line2 app and its now available for download in apple store.

One would wonder, Why Google Voice App wasn't approved? The faceoff between Apple, AT&T and Google voice is still on and will continue for some time before FCC gives a clear decision most likely in the favour of google Voice.

Google can now however use this toktumi approval for their benefit and make a case to FCC. Toktumi's Line2 app works very similar to Google Voice by letting you use one virtual number to forward to your real phone numbers. However its not a free VOIP service and costs $15, but it supports business VOIP features like phone trees etc.

Since Toktumi is a paid service, Apple probably believes it won't directly impact At&T business and it doesn't support SMS either which makes it a less preferable choice. At the same time, they might be interested in pushing toktumi ahead of Google Voice App to get as many users under this app and make it difficult for google voice to gain these customers.

Whatever be the case, the Mobile VOIP Application and the entire VOIP market in USA would face huge turmoil in 2009-2010. Lets hope we see some really good innovations and value addition to VOIP service.

Skype becomes a Independent VOIP Provider

We have been waiting to hear the news of Ebay selling Skype, Instead they sold a part of it to a group of private investors. What does this deal mean to you? Lets find out.

Skype is and still is the leader in PC based VOIP and was once america's favorite VOIP Phone when they had free calls to USA. Even today, there are thousands of skype downloads everyday around the world. However things have changed a lot globally, with Mobile VOIP taking over traditional PC based VOIP, Skype was late in accepting changes and had to give up to new providers such as Fring, Nimbuzz etc.

Recently Skype was also bought into legal issues with the their peer to peer code. It seems Ebay had enough of this and finally decided to sell the larger chunk of skype to make it a fully independent VOIP Provider.

Skype official blog says, A small group of venture capital funds have agreed with eBay to acquire a majority stake in Skype. The group is led by Silver Lake Partners, joined by Index and Andreessen Horowitz Ventures. You may recognize some names – for example Danny Rimer and Mike Volpi (both at Index Ventures) who were some of the earliest Board members and supporters of Skype.

Now Skype is a independent VOIP Provider, so what does this mean for you?

Ebay always forced skype with more conservative approach in my opinion and now i believe it can act more freely and hopefully can add more value to the already fantastic skype softphone. The key is to open up to the SIP community and have a open bridge connecting to SIP. At the same time, Skype joining the likes of Google Voice is very unlikely at this time.

At a consumer, we can only expect lower prices and the free calls to USA package to return to all american users for FREE.

Lets see what the new team at Skype will bring us, just hope for more innovation for now.
