Cheap and Free Calls on Christmas

There are many ways to make cheap calls this Christmas and wish all your friends/Family a Merry Christmas! Lets find out!

1) Who can beat Skype? Skype Country Plan is one of the most efficient and cheapest way to make calls to your friends and family. Starting from $3.95, you can get 10000 minutes of calling to 35 countries. Can anyone beat that?

2) IndiaLD is offering cheaper deal to call India. Get 5000 minutes for $35 (.007 per minute) to call India. That deal is for a limited time only, has a 45 day validity, and you must call through our California USA access number.

3) Truphone is offering 50% off discounted calling rates during the 12 days of Christmas (as they call it). TruStandard calling rates will be cut by 50% to landlines in 30 countries (and mobile phones in 5). Half-price calling starts at 00.01 (GMT) December 25 and finishes at 23:59 (GMT) January 5.

4) Localphone is not offering any promotional offer during Christmas, however they are anyways one of the cheapest and best international call providers.

5) Rebtel is one great VOIP Provider worth a shot this christmas and new year! Cheap calling rates and Local calling numbers makes it different from other provider. No special Christmas deals on Rebtel though.

6) If you are still a fan of Betamax, then give them a try. However, don't expect them to complete your call. Christmas is one of the busiest days for all telecom networks and with Betamax, you need more than luck to get your calls through :-)

7) If you want to make calls to USA, UK, Singapore, China and Australia, why not try MediaringTalk, its FREE and each call last for 10 minute. Mind the heavy traffic though.

8) RingPlus and 1-800FREE-411 are going to be overcrowded on Christmas eve. Hey, buts its FREE. Give them a try.

Whichever VOIP Provider you select to make calls to your friends/family, VOIP will play a major role on Christmas Calling market.

Merry Christmas to all blog readers and you guys have great holiday season!

O2 buys Jajah VOIP for $200 Million

Jajah came to spotlight a few years ago and since their early launch have been extremely successfully in creating marketing buzz. Definitely enough to get massive funding and now a buyout deal.

Jajah intially launched as a Free Calling Service created massive media buzz since it was one of the first free international call service launched. Jajah became popular thanks to first mover advanage. Soon, they realised that you can't burn VC's money so fast that you need to ask for more funding every quarter. However by then Jajah had millions of users which they can now hope to convert into paid users. We don't know the numbers but i believe about 5% users might have converted into paid customers from free users which is still not bad considering its popularity.

Jajah in the mean time, kept pushing its brand via media awareness, press releases. At once, I remember Jajah released press releases almost every week some of they were prolly not so "News worthy". However, we must note that Jajah was perhaps the only and most successful VOIP venture next to GrandCentral who managed to get significant funding and now a solid buyout deal.

Jajah also raise many eyebrows when they taken over the Yahoo Voice platform and its userbase. A significant move in terms of expansion and improving its brand.

O2 finally snatched Jajah for $200 million dollars. This indicates 2 things, VOIP hold massive potential in the long run and Mobile operators have realised that VOIP could crush their earnings, so why not join the party and get the fair share.

However, Its important to note that not all VOIP Providers will get $200 millions. Jajah was special in many ways and i think they are worth the price. However, Honestly Jajah doesn't anymore provide cheap international call service, there are many VOIP Provider in the world who are cheaper than Jajah. However, Brand value and perception can sell anything, so why not a costly "Cheap VOIP service". Sure they are people who are ready to premium just to use Jajah. Guess O2 won't bother much :-)

NBC Communicator VOIP Service Review

NBC is desparate to get back on track and it seems they are trying to use VOIP as backdoor to gain important in social media.

NBC.com has launched a voice over internet protocol (VoIP) application which lets you make free calls and free txt amongst users and at the same time, get involved with NBC.com news etc.

The VOIP application is called NBC communicator and you can download it off their official website. With the communicator application and you can make and receive calls. Communicator also gives you features such as Caller ID of the person calling and texting for free. Initially we thought that its a free PC to Phone VOIP service, however it only seem to work for PC to PC like Skype or yahoo messenger.

We do not see any reason why people would even want to test this VOIP application considering no added value besides watching some shows online, which you can do otherwise at far more superior websites. The element of using "VOIP" as a medium of communication itself lacks in this application.

NBC seem to have failed again with this gimmick. VOIP is not a game for news companies or media company. If it takes solid effort for VOIP providers to establish themselves, it would take lot more for Media companies to engage consumers to use their VOIP platform.

Do you think otherwise? Do you use NBC communicator? Do let us know your feedback.

Cheap Calls to Indonesia

Indonesia was once one of the costliest destinations to call but thanks to VOIP now it's even cheaper to call than most other Asian countries.

Betamax outfit Voipgain is now offering industry leading cheap calls to Indonesiafor only 1 cent for calls to Indonesia landlines and 0.05 cents for calls to Indoensia Mobile. These offers are truly remarkable. However, Its betamax so be very careful with spending a fortune with Voipgain.

If you compare Betamax to other VOIP services,

1) Localphone offers calls to Indonesia at 6.7 cents per minute
2) Rebtel offers calls to Indonesia at 2.5 cents per minute to Landline and 7.7 cents per minute for Mobile.

At the end of the day for VOIP Providers, its all about volume. If they can drive large volumes of calls to certain destinations they would be more than happy to cut the calling rates. Betamax as well know can offer dirt cheap rates. At the end of the day you either get low quality of calls or they raise the rates overnight.

However, You can still try them for calling Indonesia for such low price.

Google Voice acquired Gizmo5 VOIP Service

It seems Gizmo5 was always in the race of acquisition and finally Google Voice bought it rather than what we speculated as Skype Deal. How does Gizmo5 + Google Voice changes the VOIP Market? Lets analyse.

Google Voice has been looking for strategic partnership or acquisitions in the VOIP space for some time and Gizmo5 was definately a great choice looking at all the hype revolving around it as next best SIP based VOIP softphone and VOIP service after Skype. With Skype settling their lawsuits, can now concentrate more on the VOIP/SIP scene, Google Voice finally confirmed the acquisition days after the Skype announcement. Great coincidence or Great Timing?

I like Gizmo5 for being simple, easy and providing full SIP support. Gizmo5 has lot of other features often missing in other VOIP services or SIP softphones such as free calls to toll-free numbers. No one can deny the seamless integration between Gizmo5 and Google Voice, which clearly means more and more people are now able to hookup their Google Voice numbers on Gizmo5 and using it as PC Phone service. Google Voice should have integrated with Gtalk much before.

There is however bad news if you currently don't have Gizmo5 account, as Google has suspended new signups for Gizmo5.

What Google Voice + Gizmo5 Really means?

Well, Google Voice has not officially declared what they will do with Gizmo5 besides the obvious integration part but it seems Gtalk will retire soon and Gizmo5's softphone and technology will be used as PC interface of Google Voice. There will be a Google Voice Softphone which is nothing but a Gizmo5 softphone and you can make calls/receive calls from Gizmo5 softphone.

Do let us know what you think this deal means to you and What do you expect from Google Voice.

VoipGain.com Voip Gain Betamax VOIP Provider Review

Betamax did it again! A new VOIP service from Dellmont Sarl just hit the market, but is it worth your money? Find out as we review Voipgain, the new Betamax VOIP Provider

As we successfully concluded during our last discussion that, every month Betamax (Dellmont Sarl) comes with a new VOIP service provider to tempt VOIP users around the world with cheaper international calling rates and offering some free international calls to destinations. The strategy is always simple, offer a few free international calling destinations not offered otherwise, so you are sure to gain some customers.

VOIPGain.com is no different from recently launched Rynga.com. VoipGain offers free international calls to about 35 destinations which also include Malaysia (Landline) and China (Landline + Mobile). Voipgain offers 1 cent per minute to India landline and 1.2 cents per minute to India Mobile. Anyone see agreesive calling rate strategy here after Rynga increased their rates to India to 1.5 and 1.3 respectively.

Lets see how you can make calls with VoipGain.

1) Voipgain offeres full SIP support, which means you can use Voipgain with SIP Softphone or VOIP Adapter.

VOIPgain SIP Settings:

SIP port : 5060
Registrar : sip.voipgain.com
Proxy server : sip.voipgain.com
Outbound proxy server : leave empty
Account name : your VoipGain username
Password : your VoipGain password
Display name/number : your VoipGain username or voipnumber
Stunserver (option) : stun.voipgain.com

2) Phone to Phone: Remember that if you use phone to phone feature, you need to pay for both connections.

3) Local Access Numbers: VoipGain has local access numbers in lot of countries including USA, UK, Canada and Australia.

If you want to use Voipgain without using SIP as pc to phone service, you need to download voipgain softphone here.

Honestly, I do not see any reason to go for VoipGain as we all know whats going to happen next, however if you are still in love with Betamax and like to try VoipGain, play safe and deposit $10 and use it while their rates go up again.

Let us know your voipgain review/feedback if you are already using them.

Skype settles Lawsuit with JoltID over VOIP software Ownership

Skype really struggled this year with Lawsuit over proprietary P2P VOIP software technology. Finally, Skype managed to settle with JoltID, which is a great news for Ebay,Skype and Silver Lake Investor Group.

As per the official Press Release, Ebay (Skype) and Silver Lake has reached a settlement agreement with Joltid Limited and Joost N.V. that gives Skype ownership over all software previously licensed from Joltid and ends all litigation currently pending against the investor group and eBay at the closing of the acquisition.

In return, Joltid and Skype founders Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis will join the investor group, contributing Joltid software and making a significant capital investment in exchange for a 14 percent stake in Skype.

If you don't know already, Silver Lake along with other investors are going to buy Skype for USD 1.9 billion and the deal is expected to close in last quarter of 2009.

While the lawsuit was filed, Skype was examining the possibility of creating their own piece of code for the Skype p2p softphone and technology, however now the roadmap is clear for Skype. This should not only take some burden off but will help Skype in big way.

Skype now must concentrate on integrating and fully supporting SIP Protocol and if possible try to acquire Gizmo5.

We wish all the very best to Skype and lets hope they bring new innovation in VOIP.

LocalPhone VOIP Providers now offers fully featured SMS service

LocalPhone is one of our favorite VOIP Providers right from the first day we reviewed them, As many of you already know I am big fan of LocalPhone.

Localphone recently announced that they started offering a new SMS service in addition to their already awesome VOIP service. However, The service lacked integration with LocalPhone Numbers (I have a UK number), which means I had to add my mobile number in order to send an SMS. Guess, Localphone realised this soon enough. They have now added bunch of new features which also includes sending SMS from your localphone numbers.

1) SMS Your Direct Dial Contacts: Users in the UK can now send SMS messages to Localphone Direct Dial numbers and the message will be forwarded on to the corresponding contact. There is no extra charge for using this service, but standard SMS rates apply. Did you get this feature? Its like you added your mom's phone number in your direct dial and Localphone gave you a local number to call her. You can now send SMS to that local number and your SMS will automatically reach your mom's number. Great feature for sending SMS abroad easily

2) SMS History: From now on any messages you send will be recorded and available on your SMS History page.

3) Receive SMS Messages on Your UK Incoming Numbers: If you have a Localphone Incoming Number in the UK you can now retrieve SMS messages too. When a friend sends a message to your number it will be displayed in your SMS History. You can also send SMS’s from your Incoming Number when sending a Web SMS. Localphone is also trying to expand this functionality to more countries.

So, did you try the all new Localphone SMS feature yet? Give them a try Today!

Download Latest Reliance iCall VOIP Softphone

Lot of people are complaining about Reliace icall VOIP service not working or issues reported with reliance icall softphone. Does this latest Reliance icall VOIP softphone fix these issues?

Reliance icall claims that they have just released a new improved version of the Reliance iCall soft-phone, with enhanced security features.

If you are using the older reliance icall softphone, then you must note that the older version will not support calls any longer. You need to download the latest version to continue using un-interrupted service. Do remember to uninstall the Reliance iCall software from your system completely before installing the new one.

Reliance icall right from its launch had lot of negative reviews from users primarily because of poor backend SIP support, non existent customer service and buggy softphone. We are not too confident about this latest update either, however those who have deposited their hard earned money on this VOIP service should atleast be able to use their credit.

Please download the latest reliance icall version and check if this helps you in making calls. The primary objective is to use up all the calling credit you have in your account. Keep your feedback and reviews flowing in which helps others before they sign up for reliance icall.

Reliance iCall VOIP Provider 1 cent offer Review

Reliance definitely has large footprint when it comes to telecommunication in India with large infrastructure to provide quality and cheap price. But before you bet your money on Reliance iCall, do read this review.

Reliance iCall was launched a while back with the Free International calls offer. We covered the story then and their services was a instant hit. However, after gaining the user base they stopped offering free international calls and started branding themselves as a cheap international call provider. However, its not simple to gain market share in this extremely competitive market. With companies like Airtel Call home , Betamax breaking the 1 cent per minute barrier, Reliance finally had to match the calling rates.

Relianceicall.com now offering 1 cent per minute to India, UK, USA, Israel, Taiwan, Denmark, Malaysia, Columbia and many more. Reliance claims that there are no further hidden charges such as connection fees or monthly usage fee etc. No Annual contract which is generally not found in this market anyways. In terms of voice clarity, Reliance should be able to offer good voice quality as they run their own E1 lines.

Reliance iCall must be used as a softphone and it doesn't officially reveal SIP settings. You may however try the following Reliance icall SIP settings:

SIP Proxy : 220.224.129.34:5060
user Id: reliance icall username
password : reliance icall password

Another drawback of using Reliance icall is lack of customer support. There is no way to reach their customer service representatives via phone which means if there are any issues with your payments or with reliance icall service, you will have to rely on the feedback form. We are not too sure how effective is feedback form which is totally hidden from the average users.

In our opinion, Reliance icall is not a bad choice to try. You can atleast expect good quality calls at cheaper rates. If you are currently using reliance icall, we would like to hear your opinion. Lets us your review/feedback on reliance icall.

VOIP is the New Standard in Business Telecommunications

The communications needs of today’s businesses are growing at an incredible speed, and at the very same time that these needs are exploding into new proportions, new technologies are emerging to handle all kinds of telecommunications (both data and voice) with much greater efficiency and ease of access. Our Featured Guest Blogger Roger Collings Discusses how VOIP has taken over traditional PBX systems in Business telecommunications.

Everybody knows that the internet is an increasingly important medium for business communication, yet what many people—business owners and operators included—have failed to appreciate is that the internet is increasingly eclipsing regular telephone services. This surprising new trend, which has really taken off since the year 2004 when the internet-telephony market really exploded, is referred to as VOIP, or Voice Over Internet Protocol (also referred to as IP telephony).

The phenomenal data speeds at which corporate internet connections are able to provide these days have only cemented the role of VOIP in business communications—the faster the internet connection and the more reliable it is, the better the IP telephony service will end up being. In the US, as in many places, businesses have special access to increased bandwidth allowances that serve as one of the primary incentives for getting a VOIP network installed at business headquarters. And despite the fact that the phone traffic does not get routed through the traditional phone network switches (something that telecoms carriers got all in a fit about; in fact, they tried to get VOIP banned by law in the late 1990s when such technologies were recently surfacing on the market), there are many features associated with traditional telephone service that can be had with a VOIP connection. In fact, thanks to the proliferation of so-called small technologies, many features that are available with ordinary phone service have been enhanced and improved for use with a VOIP network connection.

Ultimately, going down the business VOIP route means investing in business and employee efficiency, as the resulting set up allows workers to save precious time and perform tasks more quickly. In fact, many recent surveys conducted among businesses in the US and Europe have revealed that in excess of 70% of businesses find that their VOIP service is more convenient and productive for business than their traditional phone service. Particularly, with a VOIP network deployed in corporate offices, business users found that the advanced features were much more intelligently configured than was the case with their previous, regular phone service.

As mentioned, many of the traditional features of business telephone system have been maintained, expanded and improved with VOIP services. Let’s take a look at a few of these on an individual basis:

  • Communications from office to office. When a business has further offices in addition to their headquarters, a pesky situation can arise as inter-office communications bills rack up with rates that are anything but preferential. With both offices having access to the same IP network, however, using the VOIP connection each office can call the other without having to pay the per-call rates that would otherwise apply using a regular phone service; if business is heating up and calls are being placed between the offices on a regular basis every day, then over the course of a month this can come to represent a substantial figure. Not only can VOIP save you that margin, but furthermore there are conference call features that can get both offices as well as another destination overseas talking in unison at incredibly discounted rates.
  • Off-net calls. Any business will inevitably have valuable people (whether they be customers, collaborators, providers, what have you) that are not plugged in to the business IP network but that need to stay in touch with business headquarters and everybody on that network. With VOIP, business can keep these individuals or organizations plugged in thanks to a convenient local VOIP number that they ring up at a severely low rate and from which they can proceed to make however many toll-free calls they need. In fact, you can automatically program the VOIP network to schedule person-to-person calls for free, whether locally, long distance and even overseas.
  • Communications security and control. To help boost the level of tracking and control within a business’s communications, VOIP allows business account owners to set up specific control mechanisms, such as lists of authorized users and special access numbers to be able to make calls.

Generally speaking, choosing to install a VOIP system at your business will accelerate the process of integration between phone and computer systems, thereby boosting employee productivity. As workers use their VOIP connections in tandem with their PCs, they will be able to retrieve pertinent data more quickly, provide callers with exactly what they need, and—in cases such as in-bound call centers—reduce the amount of time spent idling between calls.

Before deploying a VOIP system in their place of business, business owners should be aware of issues to keep in mind prior to and during the switch over process. For starters, you will want to be sure that the VOIP software you are considering implementing is reliable and tested, with a good report in general. Additionally, you will need to make sure that your bandwidth limitations won’t provide a problem, in terms of whether your other communications needs won’t prevent VOIP from being a viable solution for your enterprise. Furthermore, you will need to try stress-testing the VOIP network before full implementation: this is done to determine precisely what volume of VOIP calls will be able to be handled on your network at a given time, and will help establish a rational anticipated loss percentage for calls. In general, it is necessary to perform a wide gamut of VOIP tests to help ensure that a VOIP system deployment for your business won’t interrupt the operation of other office applications; when done properly, with sufficient testing, a VOIP system can be deployed with little to no prejudice to other systems and applications, fitting into the grand office scheme seamlessly.

So, if your business telecommunications scheme is still the same as it was over a decade ago, is it maybe not time that you considered converting to a VOIP system?

VOIP in UAE to be legal by end of 2009?

It seems UAE has finally understood the important of VOIP and telecommunication in maintaining the competitive advantage. How does this affect you as a VOIP user or VOIP Provider? Lets discuss.

We reported a few months back that Etisalat is blocking VOIP in UAE region and also possible charging a violation charge for people using VOIP via VPN. This forced many users to actually switch to DU or Etisalat's VOIP solution which is almost 10 times costlier than the most cheapest international calling service like Betamax etc.

According to Maktoob Business, A senior official at the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) said, International internet calls could be legalised in the UAE by the end of the year. Mohammed Gheyath, executive director of technology development affairs, said the regulator is drawing up a policy on international internet telecommunications, know as Voice over IP (VoIP) and will be published before year-end.

Currently only Etisalat and Du are legally allowed to offer VoIP services within the country but now they can start offering the service outside the country which means it can bring down the cost of VOIP lower but not to extent of other cheap international calls providers.

However, In my opinion UAE won't do any good by just giving VOIP in the hands of the two large telecom companies who would make little effort to bring the cost down and create a monopolistic market in UAE. What they should do instead is start offering licenses to international players and let them compete with Du and Etisalat. However looking at how things work at govenment level, its very unlikely that this will ever come in play atleast not so early.

The only hope is it might bring down the cost of ownership for telecom players and might bring down cost if they are ready to pass the benefit over to consumers. However, in monopolistic market companies often set the prices and people follow them.

If you live in UAE or call UAE often or offer VOIP services to UAE, do you think this will change anything for you?

Skype to Buy Gizmo5 VOIP Service?

Skype is seriously feeling the competition from Google Voice and has to react very quickly in order to maintain the leadership in the VOIP Space. Does that mean they are looking for a acquisition?

Skype, the world's most widely used Internet Telephony PC to PC VOIP service has lost serious ground lately with literally new VOIP services being introduced almost every month. With Companies like Google providing Google Voice, a totally free calls to USA and Canada service and bunch of value added features. The time is tough for Skype. Does that mean they are desperate to hold their no.1 position?

Techcrunch reports that Skype might buy Gizmo5. Most of these news are often rumours but if this is true then it could be very much like the Jajah + Yahoo Voice deal where Jajah taken over millions of existing Yahoo Voice customers overnight and became one of the largest VOIP Providers in USA.

Skype is also desparate to answer the "Not open to SIP" criticism. Taking over Gizmo5, a fully SIP based VOIP service, Skype might be able to send the right message to the customers and media. This also opens up the whole market as Skype via Gizmo5 can connect to Google Voice, which means in future you might be able to place calls to Google Voice numbers via Skype or vice versa.

Whatever happens from this deal, we as consumers will only benefit. I personally feel Skype's approach is the right one for survival. Lets hope we get benefited from the end result.

Jumpertel.com VOIP Service Review Good Alternative to Skype

If you thought Skype was the thing of the past, then you got a good alternative available in the market now. Read our JumperTel Review before you buy their VOIP Service.

A new VOIP Provider called Jumpertel is now offering VOIP Phone Service. Jumpertel offers this phone service for only $12 per year and you can make unlimited calls to other jumpertel numbers anywhere in the world. Its more like having a SIP Phone installed anywhere in the world and you can call via SIP.

Jumpertel.com obviously using SIP which Skype is now trying to open to slowly. Although, Skype has Skypeout which enables users to call any phone anywhere in the world by using skypeout credits. Jumpertel has not yet introduced anything similar to skype and only hoping that people actually fall for their jumpertel to jumpertel concept.

When you signup for Jumpertel, you pay $1 per month ($12 a year) and you get a jumperphone 100 (USB based VOIP Phone) for $21.99 (one time cost) and a JumperTel phone number which is unique to you.

The only good thing about JumperTel is you can access jumpertel from anywhere in the world inluding countries where VOIP is blocked. For e.g: UAE. Lets see how JumperTel will work in UAE.

JumperPhone 100 will detect if your ISP blocks VOIP. JumperTel software will suggest using their VPN software and instruct you to go through the install process and restart your JumperPhone 100. After you restart your JumperPhone 100, you will be able to talk with anyone on the JumperTel network. Basically all your calls will now be routed via VPN.

Now the biggest question is, will you buy a JumperTel service or rely on a SIP Phone or VOIP Adapter. Its one and the same thing. SIP Phone has one time cost of around $50. With ENUM support, SIP Phone can dial almost anyone across the SIP network with ease.

However, for novice users Jumpertel surely offers a good VOIP service and especially for countries where VOIP is blocked and choosing a VPN service is not so easy.

Will you buy a jumpertel, if yes, tell us why if no then too tell us why not? Your reviews and feedback will help others.

Viatalk World plan costs only $189/per year which means only $8.95 per month which is way cheaper than Vonage World Plan which is priced at $24.99 almost three times costly than Viatalk.

In order to use Viatalk World Plan, you must signup for Viatalk Unlimited Plan which gives free unlimited USA and Canada calling which costs $8.95. That means the total cost of using Viatalk World Plan is $.8.95+ $8.95= $18 per month

LocalPhone cuts Calling Rates to India before Diwali

This is the perfect time of the year to get best calling rates to call India. VOIP Providers often cut their calling rates to call India during Diwali. However, LocalPhone introduced a permanent new rates on this occasions.

I have been a great fan and user of LocalPhone for over a year now. I always preferred them over other cheap international calls providers especially Betamax, which is extremely popular amongst indians abroad. I always requested LocalPhone to cut rates and provide their world class VOIP service to people who are lured by cheap calling rates introduced by Betamax, which unfortunately do not last long. Last week, We reviewed Rynga and almost within a week, they increased their calling rates again. You can either be harrassed by these VOIP Provider or switch to a better VOIP Provider.

LocalPhone has officially announced a new calling rate for India. From today onwards, LocalPhone will only charge 1.8¢ per minute to mobiles, 2¢ to major cities, and 2.2¢ to all other landlines. As usual, LocalPhone rates always go down, they never go up. 1.8 cents in my opinion is more agreesive calling rate and can compete with other VOIP Provider like nymgo etc. One who demands Quality of Service, would only settle for LocalPhone. As i said, these calling rates are permanent and not diwali specials.

The new LocalPhone Calling rates apply for all existing and new customers. If you still haven't tried LocalPhone, I suggest you register for LocalPhone Today

Ooma Telo HD Voice VOIP Service Review

If you loved Ooma Hub, you sure will like to try Telo. Telo is the new VOIP Service/Gadget by Ooma. Before you buy Telo, Read our Telo Review and Comparison with Ooma Hub.

Ooma although heavily criticized by Media in USA including me in the past, have managed to stay on for long enough that most of us thought. Looks like, the "Ashton Kutcher" charisma really worked :-)

At the same time, we have to agree that Ooma Hub beats every single VOIP Provider hands down when it comes to looks and price. Ooma Hub would look damn sexy in your apartment and should get enough eyeballs. The pricing of Ooma has been excellent right from day 1 and now since retailers like amazon selling Ooma directly to consumers, we often get even lower price. Right now, you can grab ooma Hub at amazon for only $227.

Now Lets find out about the all new Ooma Telo and Why Ooma Telo is better than Ooma Hub.

Ooma Telo is killer in looks, more sleek than Ooma Hub and gives a bunch of more VOIP features you would love to have in 2010. Yes, am talking about the HD Voice. We are already living a high definition life then why not a HD VOIP service?

The Ooma Telo would connect to your high-speed Internet and existing home phones, allowing you to enjoy free home phone service, free US calls, and exceptionally low international rates.

Ooma Telo Features:

1) Free Unlimited US Calls to any US Landline/Mobile
2) Caller Id, Voicemail
3) Compatible with existing Cordless or Dect Phone in your home
4) You can keep your phone number for $39.99 one time porting fee or choose a new phone number for FREE.
5) Takes 15 minutes to setup. Plug and Play Device.
6) 911 Service: 911 operators would get your registered home address.
7) During Power Outages, Ooma will automatically switch your back to your traditional landline if you have any.
8) Call anyone using Ooma for FREE.
9) Telo is HD voice Ready.

Now the pricing, Ooma literally make you think twice. You get Ooma Telo device and its service for only $249 when you buy at Amazon. This is a one time fee and you never to have pay again ever again. Just call your VOIP provider and tell them shut your service off coz now you are gonna save loads of money.

If i were you, i would settle for Ooma Telo anyday just to have that gadget in my home and make free USA calls. Most importantly having to deal with overbilled monthly bills. Trust me average american spends atleast 30% of his time every weekends settling his bills and if you are over billed, you know what you are gonna get through.

Do Let us know how you find Ooma Telo VOIP Service and write a ooma telo review.

Verizon Wireless Hub VOIP Phone Services closed down

Verizon Wireless Hub VOIP Phone Service never took off as a residential phone service however now seems it really couldn't hold on for long in this competitive VOIP Phone services market.

Verizon Wireless has officially announced that they are closing down the sales of Verizon Wireless Hub VOIP Phone Service effective immediately. They already stopped selling the Verizon Hub product via retail outlets and now they stopped selling via online service.

We did a Verizon Hub Review when it was first launched and You must read user's comments. It was a clear "NO we don't want a Verizon Hub" verdict. The Price point for Verizon Hub was way out at $34.95 per month and you also need to be a verizon wireless Cell phone user with a contract. Way too much to ask for and to compete with VOIP Phone Services like Ooma or PhonePower which offers low starting prices.

Verizon has totally failed to sell Verizon Hub product via online platform or retail, which forced them to close down the Verizon Hub product.

Now I am wondering what happens to the existing Verizon Hub users? Is anyone using Verizon Hub able to use the service anymore? Please comment.

Telcan.com Telcan Unlimited India Calling VOIP Provider Review

After Vonage introduced the Vonage World Plan which included India Unlimited Calls, It seems lot of "run of the mill" VOIP Providers trying to duplicate Vonage World Plan. Before you buy Telcan India Unlimited Plan, You must read our Telcan.com Review.

As you already know, Puting your hard earned money into a VOIP Phone services isn't a cakewalk anymore with new VOIP Providers launching every week and vanish the next month. How would you choose your VOIP Provider? Thankfully, you are reading VOIP Guide and we can help you choose the right VOIP Provider for your needs.

Today we are looking at Telcan.com. Telcan claims to offers unlimited calls to India plan for a flat monthly fee of $29.99.

Lets do a Telcan Review.

1) Telcan charges you $29.99 as start-up One time Fee.
2) Monthly fee of #34 ($29.99 + $4 tax) as long as you continue.
3) Telcan offers their VOIP service through local access numbers.
4) There is no contract between you and telcan. You may cancel the service. They claim there are no cancellation fees.
5) With telcan unlimited india plan, you can dial any number in India including landline and Mobile.
6) Telcan has a phone and email support, which is good.

Now, Lets see why Telcan probably isn't suitable for you.

1) No SIP service or Support.
2) Available only via Access numbers
3) You need to register your number from where you can make calls telcan access number.
4) You can't change your authorized number during the month. Only 1 change per month.

I have also reviewed a Telcan.com review from VOIP Guide reader, Karthik. Lets see what he has to say about Telcan.

This is Karthik here. Today I received a mail from from this Telcan.com informing me about their new Unlimited Indian Calling feature. This works exactly like a calling card hence no contract issues.

But the flip side is,

  • Calls have to originate from a pre designated phone number. Hence you cannot share your plan with your friends or Family.
  • It will cost you about $34 a month. Setting aside the Betamax if we compare this with a regular calling card which costs about 1.2 cents per minute it will translate to abt 48 Hrs a month ( hope my calculation is right ). I just checked my usage per month and it does not exceed 25hrs and the total talktime of my room mate and friends is about 25hrs. Looks like this plan will be great if we have a free local calling plan ( any time unlimited , unlike unlimited after 9:00 PM ) from Vonage or other similar plan and sharing with my room mates with Time division Multiplexing in place :) but remember there is an additional cost associated with Local calling plan.
  • Telcan does not offer a local number for all states in US and Canada.

In my view, This is a very deceiving calling card plan. Hope you can share this with your readers on blog.

Thanks Karthik for sharing his thoughts on Telcan. I believe his points are to be noted by people who do not exceed the calling limit each month and can save money on these unlimited india calling plans.

Secondly, I wanted to add that those who wish to call Telcan access numbers can make use of Google Voice for calling outside your state to save money :-)

Please let us know your Telcan Review , Feedback and comments.

Sabse Technologies Bought Mobivox VOIP Service

Sabse Technologies is on the roll, After acquiring Jaxtr, Sabse now bought Mobivox. What does that mean to you as a VOIP consumer? Lets find out.

Sabse Technologies owned by Sabir Bhatia first hit news with their free conference calls service called SabseBolo. SabseBolo primarily offers free conference calls to Indian users. However Its evident that Sabse doesn't want to stop at providing conference calls or rather expand their conference calls services other parts of the world. Especially entering US and Europe market for conference call services will be the key focus for SabseBolo.

Considering these points, Acquiring Jaxtr was mainly a move to acquire existing Jaxtr infrastructure around the access numbers service they provide and now mobivox would also mean expanding the infrastructure, coz even Mobivox offers a very similar local number service.

Sabse might also try to merge Jaxtr and Mobivox together to create one local access number VOIP Provider brand. However, its very unlikely cause Jaxtr and Mobivox are already established VOIP services and they are better that way.

Mobivox has however lost lot of ground after they stopped offering free international calls service and started flat rate 2.1 cents calls to 40 countries. Many free calls users moved to other services in the mean time. However, that also means that whoever stuck around with Mobivox are most likely loyal paid users which is the key for Sabse Technologies.

Lets hope that SabseBolo can again provide free international calls via Mobivox and inegrate the access numbers for Jaxtr and Mobivox to cover more countries/cities. That would benefit all existing users and new users on both these VOIP services.

Rynga offers 0.007 Euro cents per minute to India mobile and 0.010 euro cents per minute to India landline.

Looking at all other free destinations and calling rates, its very clear that Betamax wants to penetrate the market again with new VOIP service Rynga, untill of course they launch a new service.

Do let us know your Rynga Review and feedback/comments.

Google Voice to Buy RingPlus?

There are rumours that Google Voice is looking at Ring Plus to extend its VOIP services. Although these are clearly rumours at this stage. Lets analyse why Google Voice would be interested in Free VOIP Provider like Ringplus.

RingPlus is a Free VOIP provider from USA allowing to make free international calls to lot of destinations worldwide. RingPlus manages to run their service using a Advertisement Platform which runs Ads before placing a call. They replace your ringtone with Ads. That means each call is monetized by RingPlus.

Google Voice might be interested in taking over Ring Plus for its Ad platform and the overall infrastructure they maintain. Obviously taking over the Ringplus user base which surely runs into thousands of users daily.

If this rumour is true then, Google Voice might be looking at Voice based Ad platform to be introduced in each Google Voice incoming or outgoing calls. This would be a great opportunity for Advertisers to reach audience and for Google Voice to monetize their resources effectively.

Lets see how this story develops in the coming weeks or months. We will keep a watch on Google Voice.

3) Only 15 day trial period.

4) You need a broadband connection in India in order to use Telifu Service.

5) Trial period is defined as 250 minutes of free calling (inbound & outbound) or 30 days of free calling, which ever comes first. If you do not return the telifu adapter within 14 days, a recovery fee of $69.99 will be assessed.

5) A processing fee of US $ 29.99 assessed to close the account.

Now, I believe you already realised that Telifu is a total alien VOIP Provider with no advantage to consumers.

The idea of using a telifu adapter in India doesn't make any sense. I would rather use a linksys adapter in India and setup a IPKall number and call that number from USA for unlimited times.

You can also purchase 2 linksys adapters and make SIP-SIP calls and talk till your get a headache :-)

I wonder what on earth, Telifu was thinking before even coming out with these India calling plans especially when there are other prominent VOIP Providers like Nymgo, Localphone already providing quality services to Indians abroad.

I guess they are betting on the "Unlimited Calls to India" gimmick which after reading our Telifu Review, doesn't justify anymore.

My only honest advice for Telifu, STAY AWAY!

India to Block VOIP Calls

The time is up for the Indian VOIP Market. India will soon start blocking all VOIP calls (incoming or outgoing). If you are calling India, Don't miss this news.

One of the most shocking news for Indian VOIP market is out! The verdict is India is going to block all VOIP services. The Intelligence Bureau is asking the government to block VOIP calls in and out of the country as a measure of national security.

The ban is not yet in place but it could come at any moment.

Who is going to lose when India Bans VOIP?

If ever India is going to ban VOIP, Calling rates to India will skyrocket. Our best guess is around 7-10 cents per minute or even higher, since most VOIP operators will have to end up negotiating with tier 1 telephony providers such as Bharati, Reliance or BSNL etc. It will become a monopolistic market where a few telecom providers will own your long distance calls. This would also been that cheap international calling services like Nymgo, Tringme, Localphone will have to reinvent the wheel to lower the prices further but with only a few telecom providers in play this would not be a cakewalk.

How effectively India can ban VOIP?

Well look at how UAE managed to ban VOIP. India can do the same but there are and will always be loopholes such as VPN, using IAX instead of SIP (if they ask ISPs to block 5060 ports) etc.

We believe this move is totally stupid for following reasons.

1) VOIP is not the only way of communication for anti-Indian groups. They can very well use Satellite Phones or scrambled phone lines. Government needs to upgrade their "1970" mindframe.

2) VOIP ban means more illegal VOIP usage which in turn means loss of revenue for the govt.

3) It might force us to believe that certain parties are going to benefit from this move. The telecom operators in India certainly do not like to share their revenues with cheap VOIP providers. I will be buying Bharati, Reliance communications shares now because they will skyrocket after they ban VOIP.

What do you think about this move by the government? Does this make any sense to you?

Let us know your comments and lets hope this never gets implemented for real.

Business Telephone Systems and the Future of Telecommunications

As is usually the case with technology, the big leaps forward take place at the higher levels (in the corporate sphere) and then trickle down to ordinary users at home. When it comes to telephone systems, there is no exception: Business Telephone Systems provide cutting-edge solutions to the many and diverse communication needs that a company may have, incorporating the latest technologies and utilizing the most efficient resources possible.Ask any business leader, and they will tell you that having a modern telecommunications system installed in their offices is absolutely crucial when it comes to finding new clients/customers as well as maintaining old ones, in addition to realizing a whole host of administrative chores that are essential for keeping a company afloat. In fact, the mere reference to telephones alone is insufficient at this point in the game, as all kinds of telecommunications pathways need to be integrated in order to maximize efficiency at the business place—but we'll get to that later.

With regards to simply having efficient and cost-effective telephony services at a business's offices, one crucial factor is having a Least Cost Routing service in place. Least Cost Routing (LCR) is a Business Telephone System solution that enables a buyer (aka the business) to realize outbound calls at the least possible expense, with variable controls regarding the quality of the routes being used and the quality of the calls being made. Any business that realizes large volumes of outbound calls would be wise to contract an LCR team, or install an LCR box in their offices.

The way it works is like this: Various telecoms carriers are available to carry a call from a source location to a destination; what the LCR service accomplishes is that it finds the route with the lowest fares that can carry the call needing to be made. The premise here is the fact that telecoms carriers trade destinations with each other, and there is usually more than one option for any call being made. An LCR team will create a table with all the pertinent information of carriers, routes, rates, and call quality and route quality statistics and will calculate, using advanced algorithms, which finally configuration is in the best interests of the business at hand. Of course, a business can establish certain minimal call and route quality standards and impose them on the LCR service planning process. These are measured using certain criteria, such as the average duration of a call, the amount of calls answered out of the total amount of calls made, and the delay between the last digit in a phone number dialed and the time the caller actually begins to hear a ring. The first of these criteria relates to call quality, generally, and the second and third criteria refers to the route quality. Managing a tight ship in all these regards is a central component in any state of the art Business Telephone System.

Another factor to be considered by any business trying to make their telephony service that much more efficient and streamlined is Computer Telephony Integration, or CTI. Basically, what this is about is the ability a business has to coordinate computer and telephone usage. Since modern telephone equipment is really nothing more than a specialized computer, it is logical that telephone systems should be subordinated to a business's computer network. Though there are different degrees of integration possible (first-party call control and third-party call control), the basic idea is the following: an operator can make their phone operations more streamlined and can access and save more information, more quickly. For example, a phone operator can make their dialing more expedient by utilizing automatic dialing or predictive dialing features of CTI, the latter of which is simply a more sophisticated version of the former, offering an operator a valuable tool in continuing their operations without glitches and as quickly as possible. Another aspect of CTI is the ability of operators to retrieve data from a centralized database system, accessing valuable information about the person calling them or the person they are calling (as the case may be), and allowing inbound calls to go through a series of informational filters which provide the operator with plenty of info from the get-go of a conversation. All of this information is stored in the central database, of course. Furthermore, CTI provides a business with the ability to implement call recording, a feature which can not only protect a business's interests in the case of possible litigation or claims, but generally allows for operators to accept legal commitments on the behalf of a caller and for a company to more securely monitor service quality.

In the end, Business Telephone Systems are all about sharpening a company's competitive edge. These modern systems are, in the best of cases, strategically designed to contemplate future advances in telephone and other telecommunications technologies, to cut communications costs, and to provide a higher quality service. No business profits or grows when calls are being dropped, when conversations are of poor quality and the people at either end of the line can barely understand or hear each other, and when calls aren't even getting through. Furthermore, businesses do not profit when phone operators have to tediously and laboriously search for necessary information in order to fulfill the purpose of the call they are making or that they are receiving, or when, after making or receiving a call, they have to follow an outdated and inefficient protocol in order to register whatever information was garnered from a given call. Business Telephone Systems provide companies with the ability to surmount these problems, and to create more streamlined in-house systems which reduce costs, cut times drastically (both as a measure of how long a call must take and how long it takes for the results of a call to be introduced into the company system or database), and help bring a business venture up to date with what is on the market. After all, within a relatively short period of time telephone networks will be completely subsumed by computer networks, and those that fail to rise to the opportunity will find their bottom line is seriously (and negatively) affected.

freecall2india.com offers free international calls to india

Access number based VOIP services were popular a while back but then Iowa Access number services faced legal hassles forcing most VOIP access number services to go out of business.

If you remember, Our friend Pat Phelan's allfreecalls.net and yak4ever both of which had to be shut down when they ran into legal issues with telecom service providers over termination fees.

However, it seems there are more VOIP providers ready to gamble with this strategy and the good thing is they are offering free international calls to india and many other countries.

Freecall2india is accessible from USA, UK and Brazil. You need to call their access numbers. Please note that when you call these access numbers, you will pay for the cost of calling the access number only. The international call leg is free. However its always better to check local calling rates to these numbers.

Once you are connected to freecall2india access number gateway, dial your preferred number in this format: Country Code (USA) + Area Code (Miami) + Phone Number #. For calling India, you would dial 9122268333456#

You can call following countries with Freecall2india (I really have no idea why they named the service free call 2 india when they offer more free international calls destinations)

Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Canada Mobile, Chile, China, China – Mobile, Colombia , Croatia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hong Kong – Mobile, India, India – Mobile, Indonesia , Italy, Japan, Jordan, Malaysia, Mexico , Panama, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Singapore – Mobile, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Thailand – Mobile, United Kingdom, United States , United States Mobile, Venezuela

* Mobile calls are also supported in select countries.

You can use one of the free calling services to dial their access number, so you get a end to end free international calls. You can either use Google Voice or any other free calls to USA service.

Do let us know your feedback on Freecall2India.com and their quality of service.

Jumblo increased calling rates to India

Many Betamax Services swiftly increased calling rates to India and other destinations including Smart Voip, Jumblo, VoipBlast and others.

Jumblo operates under dellmont Sarl, a betamax group company and they revised calling rates to India. JUMBLO has just increased calling rate to india from 0.7 eurocent to 0.9 eurocent per minute.

One of the reader Khan noted, that rates should be going down not up and moreover they have started charging 0.60 EUROCENTS service charge on every recharge.. EURO 10.60 is US$15.65(thats what my paypal statement said). 10.00 divided by .009 = 1111 minutes. USD$15.65 (Eu10.60) divided by 1111 = 1.41 US cents per min

Many readers reported that sticking to Jumblo.com is not a good deal anymore but still its the cheapest provider with local access numbers without monthly commitments or gimmicks like others. atleast compared to India LD or Indiaminutes. In fact most other betamax services offer higher calling rates to India.

So would you stick to Jumblo.com with these increased rates or already exploring a new VOIP provider to call India?

Toktumi Line2 Mobile VOIP Phone Service review

line2
Yesterday, we discussed how apple approved toktumi's Line2 App. Today we look at what Line2 Mobile VOIP really offers to consumers. Lets review the new toktumi line2 app.

Toktumi Line2 is purely a mobile VOIP service directly competing with Google Voice for Mobile which is yet to be approved by Apple and currently fighting a legal battle. While Google Voice struggles to make its way into Apple iphone App store, toktumi's Line2 sneaked in easily.

Line2 offers a second line with voicemail to your cell phone. You can place or receive calls from either number. Each has its own voicemail, call history, and contacts. Basically, line2 will make your handset work with 2 phone numbers. One real mobile number and one virtual phone number assigned by Toktumi.

You can get an 800 number, a local number, or even transfer over an existing number. Unlike other mobile VOIP applications, Line2 uses mobile network rather than wifi. This could be the selling point for toktumi while getting the apple (AT&T) approval :-)

Line2 totally relies on the Toktumi's VOIP service backend to offers its services. That means all line2 users will get some great VOIP services to utilize such astoktum's powerful hosted PBX system, which offers advanced features like call screening, auto attendant, do not disturb, conferencing, and after hours call handling. That itself makes Line2 a perfect business mobile VOIP service.

Additionally, you can configure Line2 as complete office phone system with centralized billing for your entire company by combining all office accounts. It also offers international calls at cheap calling rates. Guess, you would like to pass that.

As a business user, Line2 definately adds a lot of value to Mobile VOIP with PBX like features. However as a personal user, You would rather wait for Google voice for Mobile, mainly because its free and its google. heck yeah!

You can try Line2 for free for 30 days. Later its costs $15 per month. You can get Line2 for iphone or blackberry.
